During the 2023 SFA Convention (SFACON), the membership voted that this cruise will also be the venue for 2024 SFACON.  SFA Chapter VIII (8), Hawaii Chapter, has stepped up to take the lead on organizing the traditional aspects of SFA conventions during the cruise.  Many of you have been great sponsors and friends of the Special Forces Association and have provided support to past conventions.  If you have specific questions regarding support to 2024 SFACON then please contact Pete Tingstrom, SFA Chapter VIII (8) President, atspecialforces2024cruise@gmail.com.

Prepare to be inspired by an exceptional lineup of keynote speakers who have conquered adversity and achieved remarkable success both during and after their military service. Hear stories of resilience, leadership, and triumph, drawing upon the lessons learned from your time in the Special Forces and applying them to your civilian life. Potential speakers include: The Originals, Medal of Honor Recipients, Commanders of various organizations like USSOCOM, USASOC, etc. The 1st SFG and Detachment A/Berlin have already committed to conduct their reunion on the ship.  We are in discussions with SOA, 5th SFG and others to do the same.

Early registration will help guarantee a cabin category of your choice since some categories will sell out quickly. All registrations prior to June 24, 2023 will be in a drawing for prizes including a 2-cabin category upgrade (or $1,000.00), 1-cabin category upgrade (or $500.00), and other prizes TBD.  Please register early, we need to see our numbers of where we are at in the next 30 days.  If we don't meet our goal we will have to open this up to the Night Stalker Association, Rangers, Civil Affairs and other organizations to fill up the ship. There has never been an opportunity like this before, so don't be the one who sees the pictures, videos, smiles and memories after this is all over, wishing you had attended, make the commitment today and sign up.  We will be posting new information to the SFA Teamhouse and SFACON 2024 website soon.

The rooms are designed to have two occupants.  If you don't have someone to come with you, we have started a forum where folks can go and find someone to defray the cost of the room.  http://pub24.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=1987450266&frmid=10393&msgid=0

Programs: What We've Been Up To!
Our Beyond the Battlefield program continues to be a huge success!
We launched this program in May of 2022 and have supported over 70 patients receive over 500 hours of anonymous mental health counseling to date!
From our last newsletter sent in March until now, through our Sponsored Treatments and Services we have also fully funded three Green Beret soldiers to get the help they need. We could not have done this without your unfailing help and contributions to this life-changing program.

To give you an idea of how important this program is for the community, we wanted to share just a highlight of one of our anonymous patients' feedback:

"For the first time in my life I was been able to control my mind and the effects it has on my body which I have not been able to control. I have lost every relationship due to this and finally with this therapy I can stop what happens by practicing the steps, methods that I have learned in therapy. It has saved me and changed my life. My relationships with my children are so much better. I am so thankful for the opportunity to receive treatment from this provider and being sponsored by your organization. Thank you . So many Green Berets need help, knowing this is a viable option to heal is tremendous."

From January 2023 until this past week, we have lost more than six soldiers (Special Forces active-duty and veterans) to death by suicide.

We need your help to keep this program going!

Prayer Request for LTC(R) Michael O'Brien

Hello All,

One of our Special Forces brothers is in need of our prayers.  LTC(R) Michael O’Brien has prostate cancer and it has spread all over his body.  His doctor has said that there is nothing more they can do and has only given him 6 months to live.  He is currently at home and in hospice care.

Please keep Michael and his family in your prayers!

“An SF soldier praying is a soldier of God”

CW4(R) Paul T. Cooley

SPECIAL FORCES PRAYER

Almighty God, who art the author of liberty and the champion of the oppressed, hear our prayer.

We the men of Special Forces, acknowledge our dependence upon Thee in the preservation of human freedom.

Go with us as we seek to defend the defenseless and to free the enslaved.

May we ever remember that our nation, whose motto “in God We Trust,” expects that we shall requit ourselves with honor, that we may never bring shame upon our faith, our families, or our fellow men.

Grant us wisdom from Thy mind, courage from Thine heart, strength from Thine arm, and protection by Thine hand.

It is for Thee that we do battle, and to thee belongs the victor’s crown.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and glory forever, AMEN.

FIRST EVER SOAR PRAYER BREAKFAST
I am pleased to announce our first prayer breakfast will be held at this SOAR. Now, more than ever, as we see the foundations of our great country assailed and nearly destroyed, we need prayer. It was our relationship to the creator that produced our great freedom, rights, and prosperity.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident (obvious) that they are endowed by their Creator (God is the ultimate source and not the state) with certain unalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
I look forward to praying together at SOAR this year. “If my people which are called by my name shall… pray…then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 2:14)

We know that airfare is up so here's some suggestions to help get the best deal.

Experts recommend booking domesic flights one to three months in advance, and using a travel site to help monitor the cost of flights across airlines.

Always set up price alerts. Researching flight prices is part of planning any trip, but if you haven’t been setting up price alerts, now’s the time to start. Price alerts on sites like Skyscanner will notify you when airfare drops for destinations and dates you’ve saved so you won’t have to constantly check prices manually.

Get travel insurance. Seriously – do it. Travel insurance covers nonrefundable flight tickets and other prepaid travel expenses so you can be refunded in the event something unexpected comes up. A good travel insurance plan is a must if you’re booking flights in advance since anything can change between now and the time of your planned trip.

1. Use an airline that you belong to the loyalty program at. This can save on luggage fees and you might get other perks.

2. For domestic trips you monitor prices three to four months in advance, and book one to two months before the trip, which tends to be the lowest price.  You won’t necessarily book as early as you start planning, but you want to start planning your trip early enough so that when that low price sweet spot hits, you can book and take advantage of the low prices.

3. Booking with third party sites, also known as online travel agencies (OTAs),  makes finding the cheapest deal easier because their platform does the heavy work of monitoring air routes that could be cheaper than what any individual airline would offer.

Check https://www.hopper.com/, FlightDeal.com, AirfareSpot.com, and SecretFlying.com for flight deals.
BUDDY FINDER REQUESTS
From Joe Copalman: I am currently writing a book on the OV-10 Bronco and need to speak to a few SOG guys who flew aboard OV-10s as Covey Riders covering out-of-country insertions and extractions.

If it helps break the ice, I was friends with Bill Shelton, who ran air ops for CCN out of NKP in the 69-70 timeframe. Since Bill passed, I lost my go-to-guy for SOG stuff.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.  Email Joe at jcopalman@gmail.com.
Sick Call
Albert Slugocki, SOA Mem #278, is very ill.  His wife Margaret fears the end is near. Please include Al and Margaret in your prays.

Al Slugocki joined the Army in 1950, five years after he escaped from his native Poland by crossing the border to Czechoslovakia and made his way to the United States.

Shortly after enlisting, Slugocki, who fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars, was assigned to the Army’s special Green Beret unit. Fluent in English, Spanish, Polish, Russian and French, he helped train guerrilla fighters in Cambodia, Guatemala and Nicaragua. His highest award was the Silver Star.

Al was one of the Green Berets called to watch over President Kennedy's body.

Facing the Khmer Rouge - MG Ken Bowra

Major General Ken Bowra served as a Special Forces officer in Vietnam as a MACV SOG 1-0 recon team leader, running recon in Laos.

After SOG, as an A-Team commander, he trained, advised, and conducted combat operations with Cambodian troops.

He returned to Cambodia in 1974, assigned to the Military Equipment Delivery Team Cambodia, and remained in Cambodia until the fall of the Khmer Republic in April, 1975.

Talking on camera for the first time about this subject, in this moving interview General Bowra recounts his experiences opposing the Khmer Rouge with the Cambodian Army (FANK), leading up to the tragedy of the Killing Fields, which many of his Cambodian friends did not survive.
