Hello Members and Friends of the Association,

2022 Property Exemptions – It Is Not Too Late to Apply

While the timely deadline to apply for any 2022 exemption was March 1, applicants can late file until September 19, 2022. If you both owned and made the property your permanent residence as of January 1, 2022, you can still apply for 2022 Homestead Exemption and any other exemptions. You can apply for all exemptions online at https://web.bcpa.net/bcpaclient/#/Homestead

Deployed Military Exemption

Homesteaded property owners who were deployed on active military duty outside of the United States in support of a designated military operation in 2021 are eligible for an additional exemption for the 2022 tax year. Property owners deployed in 2022 will be eligible for this exemption for the upcoming 2023 tax year.

Applicants must provide US military documentation indicating their 2021 dates of active duty deployment outside the United States in support of one of the designated military operations: Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Joint Task Force Bravo, Operation Joint Guardian, Operations in the Balkans, Operation Nomad Shadow, Operation U.S Airstrikes Al Qaeda in Somalia, Operation Copper Dune, Operation Georgia Deployment Program, Operation Spartan Shield, Operation Observant Compass, Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Atlantic Resolve, Operation Freedom's Sentinel, Operation Resolute Support, Operation Juniper Shield, Operation Pacific Eagle and Operation Martillo or in support of a subordinate operation to any of the preceding. Applicants approved for tax year 2022 will receive an additional exemption equal to the percentage of the year they were deployed in 2021. This exemption requires the holder to submit new supporting documentation each year to retain these valuable savings. If your deployment crosses over two calendar years, we accept pre-filed applications for the upcoming tax year to make the application process more convenient for you.

For additional information about this important exemption, please visit our website at https://web.bcpa.net/bcpaclient/#/VeteransDeployed A servicemember’s spouse or personal representative may apply on behalf of the servicemember.

If my office can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at martykiar@bcpa.net

Take care,

Marty Kiar, CFA

Disability exemptions

You may receive a reduced property tax bill with as little as a 10% Service Connected Disability rating.

$5,000 Veteran's Disability Exemption: A copy of your Certificate of Disability from the U.S. Government or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (or its predecessor agency). The disability must be military service-related and incurred during a period of wartime service or by misfortune. The service-related disability must be to a degree of at least 10% before January 1. The surviving spouse of an eligible disabled veteran may also claim this exemption, provided he/she has not remarried. Note: The veteran must be a permanent resident of the State of Florida.

Full Exemption for Veteran's Service-Connected Total and Permanent Disability: A certificate from the US Government or US Department of Veterans Affairs. Any honorably discharged veteran with a service-connected total and permanent disability, surviving spouses of qualifying veterans and spouses of Florida resident veterans who died from service-connected causes while on active duty as a member of the US Armed Forces are entitled to an exemption on real estate used and owned as a homestead.

Deployed Military Exemption: US military documentation which clearly shows the applicant's dates of active duty military service deployed outside the United States during the immediate prior year in support of one of the designated military operations (Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Joint Task Force Bravo, Operation Joint Guardian, Operations in the Balkans, Operation Nomad Shadow, Operation U.S. Airstrikes Al Qaeda in Somalia, Operation Copper Dune, Operation Georgia Deployment Program, Operation Spartan Shield, Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Atlantic Resolve, Operation Freedom's Sentinel, Operation Resolute Support, Operation Juniper Shield, Operation Pacific Eagle, Operation Martillo, Operation Enduring Freedom – Horn of Africa, and Operation Reassurance Initiative/European Deterrence Initiative or in support of a subordinate operation to any of the preceding). This exemption requires the holder to submit new supporting documentation each year to retain these valuable savings. This exemption grants total exemption to an additional percentage of your assessed value, based upon the percent of the prior year you were deployed overseas in support of one of the specified military operations.

DEPLOYED MILITARY EXEMPTION (Form DR-501M). Must be filed annually if the owner holds homestead and was on active military duty in the prior year outside of the United States borders in support of a designated military operation.

Additional Exemption for Combat-Wounded Florida Disabled Veterans: This exemption provides an additional discount from the amount of property taxes on the homestead of a partially or totally permanently disabled veteran, age 65 or older as of January 1, and whose disability was combat-related. Under this law, an eligible veteran will receive a total exemption from property taxes equal to the percentage of combat-related disability. The property appraiser shall first ascertain all other applicable exemptions, including exemptions provided pursuant to local option, and deduct all other exemptions from the assessed value. The percentage discount portion of the remaining value which is attributable to service-connected disabilities shall be subtracted to yield the discounted taxable value. Please provide us with documented proof your disability was combat related, and a certificate from the US Government or US Department of Veterans Affairs attesting to the percentage of your permanent disability. Note: Beginning January 1, 2021 Florida law shall extend this exemption to surviving spouses of combat disabled veterans. Click here for Application for Additional Exemption for Veterans Age 65 and over with a combat-related disability (DR-501DV).

Lower Property Taxes:

If you believe your property taxes are too high, consider contacting Property Tax Consultants Ltd.  A

few in our chapter have consulted them.  The thing to remember is if you receive any discounted

taxes, any increases must begin from that point, so it can help you for years.  (Author has no affiliation

SOA MUSEUM COMMITTEE - 5TH SFG(A) HALL OF HEROES SOG DISPLAY PROJECT

SPECIAL FORCES ASSOCIATION

          Chapter 76 - South Florida

                “The Green Berets”

April 12, 2022

Hello Members and Friends of the Association,

SOA MUSEUM COMMITTEE -
5TH SFG(A) HALL OF HEROES SOG DISPLAY PROJECT

A significant opportunity to contribute to the history of SOG from the Special Operations Association!

Last year at the 5th Group reunion, Group CSM Josh King approached Col (ret) Brian Vines about a proposed addition to the 5th Group Hall of Heroes, specifically designed to honor SOG. Brian served twice with the 5th Group, as well as DCO of the 1st Group, and has served as an SOA stalwart. The proposal envisions building mannequins of SOG Recon men, kitted out in mission ready gear.

The SOA put together an informal task force to plan and implement Josh’s goal. SOA President Doug Godshall and Board Members Don Haase and Doc Padgett reached out to the Rob Graham and the Living History Brit team which created the Prairie Fire Video Game. Our Brit friends have extensively researched SOG gear - and current cost – in preparation for launching the video game.

Also joining the team MG (Ret) Ken Bowra, a former One Zero of RT Idaho and RT Sidewinder, and who served in 5th Special Forces Group as Commander ODA-572 (HALO-SADM); Commander, 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group and Commander, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and also as Commanding General U. S. Army Special Forces Command (Airborne) and later as Commanding General, U. S. Army JFK Special Warfare Center and School.  Ken in turn directed us to Roxanne Merritt, forty year employee and current Executive Director of the JFK Special Warfare Center Museum.

More than a few Zoom meetings, an inspection of potential SWC gear assets by DCO John Haake, King and SOG historian Tilt Meyer, and a visit to Group HQ by Brian and Doug, have culminated in a firm, doable, exciting proposal: We will design and arm mannequins of MOH Bob Howard, Eldon Bargewell, One Zero to MG, MG (ret) John Singlaub, CO SOG and a tribute to our indigenous partners, Bong, a Bru interpreter and senior member of Ken Bowra’s recon team.

The proposal - MACVSOG Museum Display CONOPS prepared by Brian – research, implementation and cost – is on the SOA website. We are on track to purchase and assemble the mannequins in the 5th Group Hall of Heroes to be displayed at the 5th Group Reunion in September 2022. Thereafter, the display will be eventually transported to the JFK SWC Museum.

But we need your help - $15,000.00 worth of help. In the CONOPS Report, you will see cost detail. assembled with the help of our SOA Museum Chair, Bruce Christensen, our Brit friends, with substantial help from Roxanne. We are launching this campaign to secure financial goals within sixty days, sufficient time to purchase and assemble the pieces and parts.

Your contribution will be recognized by name on a plaque attendant to the display. Please dig deep – and early – so that we can proudly exhibit the history of SOG in September 2022 at the 5th Group Reunion!
